~ selfie ~

Maybe one of the worse weeks to have to keep bailing on class, but we're rolling with it.
I'm at kind of a standstill with what I even think I want this to be. Here are some ideas I decided 'no' to because I realized I have to be an adult: 1966 batman language, feels like a clean pair of socks, old postcards from places i've been with hand lettering and words i've written (nostalgic + academic concentration), hand drawn map of where i've been, ali stickers (never could find them, so everyone should have them), 'free' dreams of mine (study astrology, read palms, not be allergic to my cat, own more than one pair of high waisted jean shorts, stop owning so many norts)

SO after that realization I had to scrap some previous ideas. Now I'm a little torn between continuing the path of my type ID, and combining this cursivey hand drawn element with blocky text. Pretty much Frosty Fox+Porz. ++++ cool. I've got a few pages filled with a's and different ways to block off my name. I'm nervous that it looks like a combination of the Frosty Fox and Porz, and that's kind of a problem since those are some portfolio pieces.
I'd like the color scheme to be black and white with one additional color, maybe a burnt yellow.
Possible typefaces: bell gothic + hand, helvetica + bodoni, sabon + brandon grotesque

Portfolio wise, I'm a little confused about what I should do. Needless to say they (Frosty Fox, Porz, Ender) all need to be touched up, but the other three I was planning on including were the Trier magazine, Jeremy's branding project, and the museum exhibition project/class. I know to create placeholder pages, but especially for the museum I'm not sure what that includes.

That's it. It's been a lot of me running around in my head about who I am as a designer, what I like v. what I'm good at, and combining all of it. And so without further ado... here

VML visit

_ Were you torn at all between working at a large firm v. small firm?
_ How far are you able to push the  boundaries of an established company v. new one (does it feel restrictive)
_ With such a large company, how do employees feel like they're connected to everyone else?
_ How much creative freedom is there within the interactive realm?
_ How long does a typical project last?
*bonus* what did you do with your backpack once you graduated college.

projects
1. Porz wine label + website . I think these both work well together to show packaging, and also an interactive side. The web design is complex, but the way it relates to the label is bold and personal.
2. Frosty Fox . The food truck start has nice potential to show my branding skills, and also implementing them. The style is also very opposite of Porz so it shoes nice contrast between the two.
3. Advocacy Posters . A lot of research went into them so I'm most confident in the background of these posters, they also show image v. type and a more playful route.

re+redo

  • Client Frosty Fox is different from other food trucks because it offers just three flavors and a world of possibilities. It focuses on the sneakiness and hideaway aspect that a fox is known for, and fun for kids to play with. They interact with kids in person and on their app.
  • Product/Idea  They are selling organic/all natural ice cream. The biggest weakness is that this truck sells only three flavors, but their strength is how the kids get to choose their flavor and become a part of the ice cream truck. They get to spin the wheel of flavor, hide the fox on the truck, make fox noises, among others.
  • Purpose Frosty Fox's goal is get kids together and interacting with their neighborhood. Through games on the truck, it becomes more of a station for a day rather than a travelling piggy bank. Kids get to learn together and get to get moving together.
  • Competitors  The competition is other ice cream trucks, ice cream stores, etc. They're telling them that ice cream is on the move, and to get out of the house and outside. We want to tell them to get outside and get moving together.
  • Audience Who are you talking to? Be specific but concise. Age, culture, sex, etc. The major demographic is kids, as young as they can start running up to pre teens. The
  • Must haves  Fliers should be posted at parks, neighborhood pools, batting cages, soccer fields, bowling alleys, radio stations. It should not be promoted through TV or  billboards. This should be spread through being with your family and around engaging activities. Needs to have 60s music, like 'My Girl' and anything by Otis Redding : feel good beats that are fun to dance around to.

Project Redo

Our next project is centered around redesigning a previous project. I'm currently torn between redoing my interactive table done junior year, or starting a new project based around exhibition design.

The interactive table was a ton of fun to develop (and could probably continue to be pushed), but in the end my design fell completely through. It was an interactive table based off hearing how you write. You would sign your name on table, and it would take the high and low points and create sound waves based off your signature. It would then turn it to a beat, and you'd be able to combine your signature with others to create a symphony of identities. Very philosophical.
"Notes" preview

I've realized my biggest question is when is  a space designed by the artist, and when is the space designed by the exhibition designer? I've included a few links to some exhibitions that I've stumbled upon that I've liked. I think now it's just a matter of how I pick what I do and where I go from there.

Obliteration Room by Yayoi Kusama
Installations by Pedro Varela
Doors by Joshua Callaghan

The other option would be to design a whole new project and design an exhibition. I've been trying to think of past projects that I could maybe design an exhibition around. So far I've thought of an exhibition based off of William Burroughs (writings, paintings, etc), Stephen Shore photography, or my idea of the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind brought to life/3D. Or ground zero and figure something else out.

Porz web/coaster

I started trying to push the website into a simple layout that you could either scroll through, or tab through. I wanted there to be some consistency between the mobile and computer site so I used the same icons in the same position. I'd like to put more watercolor into (both really) I just need to buy the watercolor 4 rl. Of course the map/route tab is being difficult on the web as well, just trying to figure out what all it should include, if there should be photos, if you run the mouse along the trail what happens, etc. I'd like to have played more with this idea before class tomorrow so I can have something substantial.

The coasters, I'd like to have a medium gray tone for 'PORZ' and deboss 'APFELWEIN' so that it stays simple compared to the rest of the expansion. Same with the wine bag.

Porz Mobile

Continuing to build the Porz mobile site structure. Although the layout may seem chaotic at first, it has a basic structure that changes slightly under each category. I'm a little torn between putting the icons at the top or on the side, since the photo would overlap the side icons it might get a little harder to see. To go back to the main home screen, users would just hit the plus sign. The route tab seems to be the hardest to design because it has a few more elements and limited space. I also just need to figure out to display the map, because right now it is feels far too busy and crammed, especially compared to everything else. I still need to do a few watercolor smudges for the call out instead of the simple line.
Concerns: how big should mobile type be? Currently it's at 10 pt... too small?
Trying to figure out a balance between using German words/not using German words.
Make it a swipe from side to get from information to information (for example, swiping from John Smith to Jane Doe to Billy Joel).
Picking a color other than blue, this would also mean changing the watercolor blue to a different color
Keep changing the center mark like it is, or keep it consistent (straight across, cornered, etc)
Do the icons make sense? Especially the 'river' icon

Ender Type

The initial typeface consisted of a regular, inline, and thin version, and after some consideration, it was brought up that the thin version isn't as snazzy as it maybe should be. So I took the chance to experiment a bit with how to keep it simple and amp it up a bit. I think it'd be great to be able to combine the three fonts so that there could be a bit of layering going on, but also stand on its own. The one with the angled backs started to bubble when there were multiple at a time, and others seemed to start going off of the map completely

The other thing I started working on is the type specimen book to be able to showcase it quickly. Although it's simple, it gives me enough space to work with when the typeface is complete

Expansion progress

A lot of this weekend was devoted to trying to find different websites that had a nice design, had unique aspects, etc. What I found is a lot of wine blogs post recipes, pairings, and about themselves, but not a lot of them do it in a very aggressive way. They all fall along the same trend of a wine bottle here, scripty font there, etc. I've noticed that stronger kinds of alcohol have stronger designers. They're quicker, no swirls/fluff, and their websites are fun. I want this whole brand to attract a younger generation that makes it look sleek to drink apfelwein, that it's not just one of the lowest alcohol rates.

Not only would I like for them to to be able to interact with the website, but also create an app for a tablet/iphone. This way they can take a tour of the path virtually, find out different pairings, go through the wine making process, fun facts about the route, etc.  I'd also like to push it into its own brand, so creating posters, coasters, wine boxes/bags, wine bottle opener. And before I go into the whole app arena, I wanted to solidify that look first. It definitely needs to be pushed more with more elements intertwined, rather than the same image and grid used over and over, which I can see now.

Expand A Project

_describes the project for expansion
The installation “Wind of Change” creates a fluid movement between concrete spaces just as immigration finds a similar movement within a country. The interaction between newcomers and natives is mimicked as elements begin to transform each other on the frame. These curved and graceful shapes reflect how surroundings adapt to new incoming cultures. As people travel in and out of countries, the culture gap becomes smaller and smaller, just as the spaces between the paper grow smaller. When these elements from different cultures are brought together we become a source of change, and these small, continuous movements give lasting changes to a country enabling it to discover new paths for generations to come.

_justify why it deserves to be expanded
The cube became such a large installation and there wasn't really a chance to be able to push it into other realms. I want this cube to be able to be available through a multitude of design resources. It tells the story and history of Luxembourg, which is interesting in itself, but shown visually as so, it's so much more delicate, interesting, and easier to understand. It deserves to be expanded because it's my most diverse project, and one that is outside of the realm of graphic design. I think that in itself is important enough, that it can be both an installation and a design.

_lists any things to be improved and other channels you would like to expand to (print, web site, mobile, tablet, environmental, motion, etc.)
I'd like to take the project through a multitude of different mediums. I'd like to make a short motion clip showing how it works and how the cube came about... maybe in a sort of commercial way to promote Luxembourg and their culture, or just as an intro video. Also, I'd like to be able to make it into an app so that people can still manipulate the cube virtually, and also to learn more about Luxembourg. It deserves more exposure
