MORE DEFINITIONS AND SHIZ
WEIGHT_the density or lightness of the individual letter forms
WIDTH_the distance from one side of a character to the other. in typography, width can also be measured in "ems", which defines the proportion of a given letter's width and height with respect to the point size of a given font.
STYLE_level of boldness or kind of letter within a typeface.
FONT_a collective name for a typeface but actually referring only to a single style
TYPEFACE_the artistic representation or interpretation of characters; it is the way the type looks.
X-HEIGHT_the height of a lowercase “x” in a typeface. Can impact a typeface’s “visual weight” and readability and therefore impact on the typesize that we choose.
CAPT HEIGHT_the height of a capital letter above the baseline for a particular typeface.
LEADING_the vertical spacing between baselines.
LETTERSPACING_the spacing between letters in a line of text.
HOW IS TYPE MEASURED IN INCHES, MM, POINTS, OR PICAS?_Type is measured in points and picas which measure type size, line spacing, and column width.
PICA_the printers unit of measurement that is equal to 12 points.
POINTS IN AN INCH_72 points in 1 inch
IF A LETTER SET IS 36 POINTS ABOUT HOE MANY INCHES TALL IS IT_1/2 inch tall
PICAS IN AN INCH_6 postscript picas
POINTS IN A PICA_12 points in 1 pica

DEFINITIONS & SHIZ
GRID_a grid is a structure made up of horizontal and vertical lines, and is the framework where text, image and space can be combined in a cohesive manner. designers use a grid as an infrastructure upon which to build both complex and austere layouts that enable hierarchy and accessibility through flexibility and consistency.
BENEFITS/FUNCTIONS_grids are heavily accredited to swiss design, which emphasizes visual simplicity and uniformity through the deployment of design elements on a mathematically constructed grid, allowing for precise, clean layouts.
MODULAR GRID_consistent horizontal divisions from top to bottom in addition to vertical divisions from left to right
MARGINS_the spaces separating the content in the middle from the edge of the paper.
COLUMNS_the vertically aligned groupings of modules
GRID MODULE_each individual box in the module
FLOWLINES_the continuous lines that align each module
GUTTER_the space between modules
HIERARCHY_emphasizing, prioritizing and emphasizing certain elements of a graphic more heavily than others.
Portrayed clearly, consciously implemented visual prompts direct a viewer's attention appropriately based on the importance of each individual element or piece of information.
TYPOGRAPHIC COLOR_the relative lightness or darkness of a block of text. Factors like font size, and the size between letters, and the size between lines dictates the shade of color in a text block.
WHITE SPACE_where no image or text exists.
CONTRAST_Contrast occurs by forcing distinction between one thing and another as a way to communicate a message. Contrast can be achieved using size, color, and by using or not using an amount of space.

TYPE
so a couple days ago we were told to go out and spell out type. well shannon and i used all of the 45 minutes to go back to my house to play with shadows. somehow we just kept using the straightener for all of the letters. and although the pictures are not as clear as i wish they were, i think the bulkiness of the straightener and the stringiness of the cord work well together.
all in all, im glad we used all of that 45 minutes because this is just neat.

PROJECT 1A
eLePhAnTs
- Elephants are the biggest land mammals still alive. They have been divided in two families: the elephas and the loxodonta. there are only three species of elephants still present: the african bush elephant, the african asian elephant and the asian elephant.
- The elephants can live between 50 and 70 years. The oldest known elephant lived 82 years old.
- They are the symbol of wisdom in the Asian culture and they are renowned for their great memory and intelligence.
- The word ‘elephant’ comes from the greek “ἐλέφας” which means ivory.
- The adults in good condition are said to have no natural predators except the humans which are a real threat to them.
- The Elephants live in a society with a structured social order. Females and males live very different lives. Females live their entire life in families made up by the elderly mothers, daughters and sisters. The matriarch is usually the oldest female elephant of the tribe will lead the group. The males on the other spend lives living alone and will regroup the time of mating.
- The elephant clans are composed of 5 to 15 adults and many young males and females. Groups eventually break up when there are too many members. Elders will separate and form their own clans. They keep bonds between each herd and remember being once altogether.
- When elephants travel, they walk very quietly behind each other and that too in a single line.
- Elephants are sensitive fellow animals where if a baby complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it.
- Elephants have greeting ceremonies when a friend that has been away for some time returns to the group.
- Elephants grieve at a loss of a stillborn baby, a family member, and in many cases other elephants.
- Elephants don't drink with their trunks, but use them as "tools" to drink with. This is accomplished by filling the trunk with water and then using it as a hose to pour it into the elephant's mouth.
- Elephants suck up water into their trunks and shoot it into their mouths, while drinking. Elephants cool off themselves by fanning their ears. Fanning cools the blood in their ears and when this blood goes to the rest of their body, it also gets cooled. Since African elephants live where the sun is usually blazing hot, they use their trunks to help them keep cool. First they squirt a trunkful of cool water over their bodies. Then they often follow that with a sprinkling of dust to create a protective layer of dirt on their skin (think elephant sunscreen!). Elephants pick up and spray dust the same way they do water—with their trunks.
- The trunk of an elephant can hold up to two gallons of water and can drink up to 80 gallons of water a day
I (HEART) DESIGN
so back in the early days of childhood, my mom read where the wild things are practically every night. she made the voices, acted out the monsters and brought the book to life. i heard the music and the roars, i felt the rough fur, i smelled the rich ocean water. the only memory i have of this is pure happiness. so when the movie came out a few years ago, it brought me an entire new view to my life now.
instead of screaming out with max, and embracing with the wild things, i saw new things. i saw the font and how well it matched up to the movie. i saw the way that the warner bros logo was scribbled out so it was max's face. i heard the music match the youthfulness of max, the abruptness of situations, the simplicity of wanting to do whatever you want, however non-simple that really can be.
what really made me choose this is the fact that when i went back and saw this movie, the context was rather different, but new things made me smile. the way i still saw my childhood, and the way i could see my future in one piece of fiction.
