QUESTIONZ

1] What are some ways to indicate a new paragraph.
A new paragraph begins after an indentation, or tab. A new paragraph can also be shown by leaving a blank line between the two paragraphs. Symbols can be used in denote new paragraphs, as well as text size for either the first word or first sentence of a new paragraph.

2] What are some things to look out for when hyphenating text.
Try to leave at least 2 characters on the line and 3 following, avoid hyphenating proper nouns.

3] Define font hinting. Why is it necessary?
Font hinting is using a rasterized grid to display letter forms that look right to the human eye. At low screen resolutions, hinting is critical for producing a clear, legible text.

4] What is letter spacing/tracking? How do you track in Illustrator or InDesign
Letter spacing is the space between letters and can be called functional white. The white is essential to font legibility and the desired visual impression of the text. The picture illustrates how to track in InDesign or Illustrator.

5] Define Kerning? Name 8 kerning pairs. How do you kern in InDesign or Illustrator?
Kerning is the process of adding or subtracting space between specific pairs of characters. You can automatically kern type using metrics kerning or optical kerning. Metrics kerning uses kern pairs, which are included with most fonts. Kern pairs contain information about the spacing of specific pairs of letters. Some of these are: LA, P., To, Tr, Ta, Tu, Te, Ty, Wa, WA, We, Wo, Ya, and Yo. To kern in Illustrator or InDesign, type or select a numeric value for kerning (looks like A V) in the Character panel.

6] What is word spacing?
Word spacing refers to the size of the space between words.

7] Explain DIN.
Because of a throughout standardisation, normalized DIN A sizes are usually the starting point for paper sizes for printed mater. The sizes of the sheets of paper that are supplied by paper manufacturers are based on these DIN A sizes, with a bit added for trimming, the gripper margin of the printing press and the finish. DIN sizes use a 1: Square Root of 2 ratio. Besides the well-known A sizes, B and C sizes are also used. The B sizes are so-called uncut sizes so the page can be printed with bleed after which the sheet can be cut to a size A. The C sizes are mainly used for envelopes, which can then hold an A size. The American version of the A4 size is 8.5 x 11 inches and is therefore considerable shorter than an A4.

8] What is a baseline grid?
A baseline grid is an imaginary grid upon which type sits. The baseline pf a piece of type can be forced to 'snap' to this grid to maintain continuity across the pages of a design.  The grid in Baseline is composed of 4 basic columns, for more flexibility each column can be divided in 2 units.

9] How many characters per line is optimal? Is there a range?
The optimal line length for your body text is usually considered to be within the 50-60 characters per line. At most up to 75 characters is acceptable.

10] Define aesthetic text alignment.
Hanging punctuation controls the alignment of punctuation marks for a specific paragraph. Paragraph alignment determines the margin from which the punctuation hangs.

11] What is a window?
A paragraph-ending line that falls at the beginning of the following page/column, thus separated from the rest of the text
12] What is a typographic river?
A typographic river occurs in justified text blocks when the separation of the words leaves gaps of white space in several lines. A river effect is created where white space gaps align through the text.

13] What is an orphan?
An orphan is the final one or two lines of a paragraph separated from the main paragraph to form a new column and should be avoided at all costs.

READING

Who is Herb Lubalin? //  Worked for a few advertising agencies and then opened his own firm.  He was a logo designer who injected visual metaphors into typography and denied traditional letter spacing.

Why was Esguire important? // Combined fiction, sports, humor, poetry, fashion and other elements of lush lifestyles targeted at men. He published respected writers such as hemingway, but the pinup girls brought on bad publicity.

Who is Alexey Broadavich? // Worked on harpers bazaar, freed the page to take pleasure in white space and the finely tuned pacing of text and image.

What did Hoefler-Jones do for Harper's? // Didot type family.

Who is Gail Anderson? // Art director of rolling stone.

Who is David Carson? // Art director of Ray Gun, put together first issue. typography was his core.

Who is Tibor and what is M&Co? // Designer of Color, lack of decorative elements and visual devices and limited use of sans-serif typefaces allowed the photography and content to speak more loudly than the design. M&Co: (M for his wife) with two other designers from barnes and noble. wit humor and social consciousness through an approach sinuously shifting between deadpan and expressive wasnt immediate. he closed this and moved to italy to work on Color.

Who is Neville Brody? // Art director of The Face and introduced first custom typeface with issue number 50, a unique aesthetic.

What is Speak? // Magazine: thoughtful writing on culture, loosely covering music, fashion, literature, and art. Used found materials and hand drawn elements because of their low budget.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Alec Soth // an American photographer notable for "large-scale American projects" featuring the midwestern United States. His photography has a cinematic feel with elements of folklore that hint at a story behind the image

Stephen Shore // known for his deadpan images of banal scenes and objects in the United States, and for his pioneering use of color in art photography. Worked for companies like Nike, Elle, and Chanel while doing own side work.

Jeff Wall // a Canadian artist best known for his large-scale back-lit cibachrome photographs and art-historical writing. Wall has been a key figure in Vancouver's art scene since the early-1970s. Early in his career, he helped define the Vancouver School and he has published essays on the work of his colleagues and fellow Vancouverites Rodney Graham, Ken Lum and Ian Wallace. His photographic tableaux often take Vancouver's mixture of natural beauty, urban decay and postmodern and industrial featurelessness as their backdrop.

LETTER FOUNTAIN

What are small capitals? How are they different than setting something in ALL CAPS? Does your font have small caps? If not name a font that does.
are uppercase characters set at the same height and weight as surrounding lowercase letters or text figures. They are used in running text to prevent capitalized words from appearing too large on the page, and as a method of emphasis or distinctiveness for text alongside or instead of italics or whenbold  is inappropriate.

What are ligatures? Why are they used? When are they not used? What are common ligatures? Does your font have ligatures? If not name a font that does.
are combinations of characters that were designed because, in metal typesetting, the overhanging ascenders in the letter 'f' would crash into an ascender or the dot of an i if it directly followed the f. ligatures have better results in photographic or digital settings as well because the ascender of the 'f' and the dot of the letter i  are designed to join instead of arbitrarily overlapping. If extra letter spacing is used in a text, however, these combination of characters have to be set separately.

What is the difference between a foot mark and an apostrophe?
A punctuation mark, and sometimes a diacritic mark used for three main reasons: to omit one or more letters, mark a possessive case, and mark plurals.

What is the difference between an inch mark and a quote mark (smart quote)?
inch mark-  two straight vertical lines making up the symbol denoting to the unit of measurement inches. Quotation marks-punctuation marks appearing at the beginning and ending of a quote. Smart quotation marks have a curve to them.

What is a hyphen, en dash and em dashes, what are the differences and when are they used?h
Hyphen- punctuation mark used to join words and to separate syllables of a single word.
Em-dash- used in a sentence to indicate a break in thought.
en-dash-is traditionally half the width of an em dash and is used when denoting a range.

font: Caslon
designer:  William Caslon

Caslon is a serif font and has irregularity characteristics of Dutch Baroque types. It has become known as the first original typeface of English origin...which is super freaking nifty if you ask me. that means its the longest standing font around....so. It also was used to set both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.

So let's talk about what makes Caslon so darn interesting!

FONT DESIGNERS

aLiVe
Tobias Frere-Jones
Tobias Frere-Jones, half of company Hoefler & Frere-Jones, was approached by GQ Magazine with a request to design a sans-serif typeface with a geometric structure that felt fresh and masculine. Frere-Jones explored the vernacular letting and signage of New York and created Gotham. This typeface is based on all-uppercase signage with a number of weights ranging from thin to black.

Matthew Carter
Born in London in 1937, Carter is currently a type designer in the United States. Carter worked as a freelancer as well as typographic advisor. In 1981 he created Bitstream Inc. with his colleague Mike Parer that focused on digital type. SOme of his more well known typefaces include Georgia and Verdana.

Erik Spiekermann
First designed the typeface, Meta, and later went on to become the directer of a type company, Fontshop, which he created.

Christian Schwartz
Schwartz was born in 1977 and studied Communication Design and Carnegie Mellon University. His first typeface was released by FonHaus in 1992 when Schwartz was only years old He has designed typefaces for companies such as Volkswagen, Esquire Magazine, and The Guardian Newspaper. He has designed over 25 different typefaces, including Farnha, Graphik, and Neutraface.

Jesse Ragan
After becoming interested in typography in high school, Ragan attended RISD and realized he would be interested in typography as a career. He has been a working typographer for both the Hoefler & Frere-Jones foundry and Joshua Darden Studio. Some of his more popular typefaces include Archer and Gotham (both made with Tabias Fere-Jones and Jonathan Hoefler.

dEaD
Paul Renner (1878-1956)
Born in Germany, Renner lived from 1878-1956. Renner is well known for creating on of the most influential geometric typefaces known as Futura. Even though Renner was not directly involved in the Bauhaus movement, the modern design element in Futura made it a good representative of the movement. Futura remains an extremely popular and influential typeface that can be found in several variations.

William Caslon I (1692 - 1766)
In 1722 William Caslon I designed Caslon Old Style, the first of the Caslon series of typefaces. Over the years he released variations of Caslon Old Style which were used throughout Britain and the U.S. Some of the first copies of the United States Declaration of Independence were printed in Caslon, as Benjamin Franklin was an admirer of the typeface.

Bruce Rogers (1870-1957)
Rogers was schooled as both a painter and illustrator. He was famous for being one of the designers for bibliophile books. He designed the typeface Centaur. He first drew it out in ink and the calligraphic influence can be seen.

Stanley Morison (189-1967)
Original creator of the Times New Roman and co-founder of the Fleuron Societ, where he published and edited The Fleuron, a journal of typography.

Max Miedinger (1910 – 1980)
In 1957 Max Miedinger created the typeface Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk, increasingly popular for its time. A few years later the typeface was redrawn to work with the Linotype machine and it became known as Helvetica (Latin for the word Swiss). The typefacebecame one of the most used typefaces throughout the 60's and 70's and is still a top choice for designers today.

MORE DEFINITIONS AND SHIZ

WEIGHT_the density or lightness of the individual letter forms

WIDTH_the distance from one side of a character to the other. in typography, width can also be measured in "ems", which defines the proportion of a given letter's width and height with respect to the point size of a given font.

STYLE_level of boldness or kind of letter within a typeface.

FONT_a collective name for a typeface but actually referring only to a single style

TYPEFACE_the artistic representation or interpretation of characters; it is the way the type looks.

X-HEIGHT_the height of a lowercase “x” in a typeface. Can impact a typeface’s “visual weight” and readability and therefore impact on the typesize that we choose.

CAPT HEIGHT_the height of a capital letter above the baseline for a particular typeface.

LEADING_the vertical spacing between baselines.

LETTERSPACING_the spacing between letters in a line of text.

HOW IS TYPE MEASURED IN INCHES, MM, POINTS, OR PICAS?_Type is measured in points and picas which measure type size, line spacing, and column width.
PICA_the printers unit of measurement that is equal to 12 points.

POINTS IN AN INCH_72 points in 1 inch

IF A LETTER SET IS 36 POINTS ABOUT HOE MANY INCHES TALL IS IT_1/2 inch tall

PICAS IN AN INCH_6 postscript picas

POINTS IN A PICA_12 points in 1 pica

DEFINITIONS & SHIZ

GRID_a grid is a structure made up of horizontal and vertical lines, and is the framework where text, image and space can be combined in a cohesive manner. designers use a grid as an infrastructure upon which to build both complex and austere layouts that  enable hierarchy and accessibility through flexibility and consistency.

BENEFITS/FUNCTIONS_grids are heavily accredited to swiss design, which emphasizes visual simplicity and uniformity through the deployment of design elements on a mathematically constructed grid, allowing for precise, clean layouts

MODULAR GRID_consistent horizontal divisions from top to bottom in addition to vertical divisions from left to right

MARGINS_the spaces separating the content in the middle from the edge of the paper.

COLUMNS_the vertically aligned groupings of modules

GRID MODULE_each individual box in the module

FLOWLINES_the continuous lines that align each module

GUTTER_the space between modules

HIERARCHY_emphasizing, prioritizing and emphasizing certain elements of a graphic more heavily than others.
Portrayed clearly, consciously implemented visual prompts direct a viewer's attention appropriately based on the importance of each individual element or piece of information.

TYPOGRAPHIC COLOR_the relative lightness or darkness of a block of text. Factors like font size, and the size between letters, and the size between lines dictates the shade of color in a text block.

WHITE SPACE_where no image or text exists.

CONTRAST_Contrast occurs by forcing distinction between one thing and another as a way to communicate a message. Contrast can be achieved using size, color, and by using or not using an amount of space.

TYPE

so a couple days ago we were told to go out and spell out type. well shannon and i used all of the 45 minutes to go back to my house to play with shadows. somehow we just kept using the straightener for all of the letters. and although the pictures are not as clear as i wish they were, i think the bulkiness of the straightener and the stringiness of the cord work well together.
all in all, im glad we used all of that 45 minutes because this is just neat.

PROJECT 1A

eLePhAnTs

  • Elephants are the biggest land mammals still alive. They have been divided in two families: the elephas and the loxodonta. there are only three species of elephants still present: the african bush elephant, the african asian elephant and the asian elephant.
  • The elephants can live between 50 and 70 years. The oldest known elephant lived 82 years old.
  • They are the symbol of wisdom in the Asian culture and they are renowned for their great memory and intelligence.
  • The word ‘elephant’ comes from the greek “ἐλέφας” which means ivory.
  • The adults in good condition are said to have no natural predators except the humans which are a real threat to them.
  • The Elephants live in a society with a structured social order. Females and males live very different lives. Females live their entire life in families made up by the elderly mothers, daughters and sisters. The matriarch is usually the oldest female elephant of the tribe will lead the group. The males on the other spend lives living alone and will regroup the time of mating.
  • The elephant clans are composed of 5 to 15 adults and many young males and females. Groups eventually break up when there are too many members. Elders will separate and form their own clans. They keep bonds between each herd and remember being once altogether.
  • When elephants travel, they walk very quietly behind each other and that too in a single line.
  • Elephants are sensitive fellow animals where if a baby complains, the entire family will rumble and go over to touch and caress it.
  • Elephants have greeting ceremonies when a friend that has been away for some time returns to the group.
  • Elephants grieve at a loss of a stillborn baby, a family member, and in many cases other elephants.
  • Elephants don't drink with their trunks, but use them as "tools" to drink with. This is accomplished by filling the trunk with water and then using it as a hose to pour it into the elephant's mouth.
  • Elephants suck up water into their trunks and shoot it into their mouths, while drinking. Elephants cool off themselves by fanning their ears. Fanning cools the blood in their ears and when this blood goes to the rest of their body, it also gets cooled. Since African elephants live where the sun is usually blazing hot, they use their trunks to help them keep cool. First they squirt a trunkful of cool water over their bodies. Then they often follow that with a sprinkling of dust to create a protective layer of dirt on their skin (think elephant sunscreen!). Elephants pick up and spray dust the same way they do water—with their trunks.
  • The trunk of an elephant can hold up to two gallons of water and can drink up to 80 gallons of water a day

I (HEART) DESIGN

so back in the early days of childhood, my mom read where the wild things are practically every night. she made the voices, acted out the monsters and brought the book to life. i heard the music and the roars, i felt the rough fur, i smelled the rich ocean water. the only memory i have of this is pure happiness. so when the movie came out a few years ago, it brought me an entire new view to my life now.
instead of screaming out with max, and embracing with the wild things, i saw new things. i saw the font and how well it matched up to the movie. i saw the way that the warner bros logo was scribbled out so it was max's face. i heard the music match the youthfulness of max, the abruptness of situations, the simplicity of wanting to do whatever you want, however non-simple that really can be.
what really made me choose this is the fact that when i went back and saw this movie, the context was rather different, but new things made me smile. the way i still saw my childhood, and the way i could see my future in one piece of fiction.
